NationTalk: A Mi’kmaq Nation gathering in Charlottetown, PEI on September 9, 2024 marked a step forward to increased collaboration between the traditional Mi’kmaq government the Grand Council and Chiefs of all the Mi’kmaq Nation.

Chiefs from across the entire Mi’kmaq Nation from Newfoundland to the Gaspe’ in Quebec gathered and discussed ways to strengthens relations between Chiefs and the Mi’kmaq Grand Council. Many noted stronger relationships and connections will ensure all Chiefs and all Grand Council members work to improve the lives of all our people across all our traditional territories. The many issues and challenges faced by all the communities need a focused effort of all leaders to improve the lives of all our members across all our traditional territories not just by individual communities working on issues and concerns.

“Today, is an important step so we can all work together on a common goal to improve the lives of all our people across our traditional territories and not be separated by provinces and traditional boundaries.” Noted KJI Saqmaw Council Norman Sylliboy. “It is my hope through this gathering and the commitment of both our Chiefs and Grand Council can start a new path based on the entire Mi’kmaq Nation which includes 5 provinces” noted Chief Arron Sock of Elsipogtog. “I will continue to work with all our leaders across the Nation to build a strong united voice for our people.” Chief Sock.

A small working group of Chiefs and the Mi’kmaq Grand Council members will continue the discussions to further the efforts to bring all our leaders together as a Nation.
