We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Survivors and their organizations, and other parties to the Settlement Agreement, to commission and install a publicly accessible, highly visible, Residential Schools National Monument in the city of Ottawa to honour Survivors and all the children who were lost to their families and communities

Why “In Progress?”

June 20, 2023: In keeping with the spirit and intent of Call to Action #81 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), the Survivor-led Steering Committee announced today that the Residential Schools National Monument will be installed on Parliament Hill, in Ottawa. The site, near West Block, was blessed by Elders during a special ceremony.

April 29, 2022: The steering committee for the new monument is set to hold its first meeting in May to discuss the project. The committee will then start work on selecting a site and launching a design process. A planned completion date has not been set.

Aug. 11, 2021: Toronto Star – The federal government committed $20M to build a national monument in Ottawa to honour the survivors of residential schools and all the children who were lost. It will be a commemorative space where Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples can gather “to express their collective grief and find a way forward to heal together. No other details or timelines have been announced.
