We call upon the Prime Minister of Canada to formally respond to the report of the National Council for Reconciliation by issuing an annual “State of Aboriginal Peoples” report, which would outline the government’s plans for advancing the cause of reconciliation.
Why “In Progress”?
June 22, 2022 – Bill C-29 National Council for Reconciliation introduced in Parliament. The Bill would also lay the foundation to address Calls to Action 55 and 56.
Call to Action 56 is dependent on the full implementation of Calls to Action 53, 54 and 55.
Interim Board appointed on Dec. 14, 2017 presented their Final Report to Minister Bennett on June 12, 2018. The federal government will determine formal communications process to deliver the “State of Aboriginal Peoples Report” after the National Council for Reconciliation has been established.
Significant deletions on official federal government response website “Delivering on the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action”
The Oct. 25, 2018 update deleted reference to “acting quickly to implement the recommendations, including the method in which it will report to parliament and all Canadians and the way in which government will be required to respond to these reports. The government instead indicates they will “take into consideration the advice and recommendations provided in the final report”.
