Council of Canadian Law Deans and Federation of Law Societies of Canada Joint Working Group on Approaches to TRC Calls to Action
Terms of Reference
Mandate
The mandate of the Joint Working Group is to foster collaboration between the Council of Canadian Law Deans (“CCLD”) and the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (“Federation”) on approaches to successful implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action 27 & 28 and to share information about on-going developments at law schools and law societies.
The Joint Working Group will have four specific goals:
- To consider how law societies and law schools are meeting the challenge of the TRC’s Calls to Action, including but not limited to CTAs 27 & 28.
- To share best practices between law schools and law societies.
- To promote information-sharing between law schools and law societies.
- To consider how to best promote and publicize responses to the TRC’s Calls to Action.
Composition
The Joint Working Group will be comprised of no more than 10 individuals, five appointed by the CCLD and five appointed by the Federation. To provide continuity on the Joint Working Group two appointees from each body will be appointed for an initial term of three years. All remaining and subsequent appointments will be for two year terms.
Meetings
- The Joint Working Group will commence work as soon as requisite formal approvals are received from both bodies and will continue as long as mutually agreed.
- The Joint Working Group will aim to meet once annually in-person (subject to the feasibility of in-person meetings) and two or three times per year by video conference.
Reporting
- The group will produce periodic reports as appropriate and a final report if it is to be wound-up.
