Amplifying Indigenous Health Research Training Opportunities

NationTalk: Toronto – LifTING (Life Threatening Illness National Group) & Sepsis Canada Research Training Program is presently welcoming applications for its 2024-2026 cohort. This two-year virtual health research training program is fully funded by CIHR, providing a distinct opportunity for individuals interested in engaging with or conducting research. While our primary focus lies in life-threatening illnesses and/or sepsis, our training equips learners with the necessary tools to partake in a broad spectrum of health-related research endeavors.

One learner shared, “I’ve had a fantastic experience with the program so far, and I’ve loved everything about it. I think as a paramedic, there’s limited training in health research, and it’s always something that I’ve had an interest in pursuing. So, having this opportunity to experience research, learn from experts and understand different avenues for conducting or engaging with research has been very exciting for me. I’ve found the program to be very beneficial.”

Under the guidance of dedicated directors Dr. Patricia Fontela, Dr. Dominique Piquette, and Dr. Denise Jaworsky, the program endeavors to bridge research silos and foster collaborations among early career researchers, established investigators, and community members, including patient and family partners and collaborators.

Our program’s core principles prioritize the creation of a culturally safe learning environment. We are committed to integrating Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles which encompasses anti-oppressive practices, and social justice. Additionally, our program features dedicated modules designed to promote Indigenous inclusion, cultural safety, and understanding.

Key Program Components:

• Curriculum: Interactive online modules & workshops tailored to stream-specific needs.
• Mentorship Pods: Small group mentorship to foster professional connections.
• Research Practicum: Engage in experiential learning opportunities.
• Annual Symposium: Fully covered in-person event to facilitate networking.
• Trainee Award Competition: Funds 3 research proposals at $25,000/stream.

Applications are open to early-career researchers, healthcare professionals, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research staff, knowledge translators, and community members. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by Friday, May 3, 2024. (*Please note that the application form on the website indicates that the deadline is April 19th, 2024, but this has been extended).
