Cora Morgan also Named Secretary to Gender-Based Violence Committee of Cabinet: Fontaine
NationTalk: The Manitoba government is announcing the appointment of Cora Morgan as the special advisor on Indigenous women’s issues and secretary to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Peoples and Gender-Based Violence Committee of Cabinet, Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine, minister responsible for women and gender equity, announced today.
“Our government is committed to prioritizing the safety of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit Manitobans,” said Fontaine. “The appointment of Cora Morgan is an important step in this sacred work. Our government is committed to helping our women, girls and two-spirit thrive, realize their dreams and stand as matriarchs in our communities. Cora Morgan will bring her vast expertise and compassion to this role. I look forward to working together with her on this sacred and critical path.”
Morgan is Anishinaabe from Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba. Throughout her career, she has been a passionate advocate that supports Indigenous children, youth, women and MMIWG2S+ families. Morgan has served as the First Nations family advocate with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and most recently as executive director of Onashowewin Justice Circle. Her trailblazing leadership was instrumental in raising awareness of Indigenous children’s unethical birth alerts, noted the minister.
“I’m honoured to be part of a government that prioritizes the safety and well-being of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit Manitobans.” said Morgan. “I cherish the opportunity to make impactful changes to improve the quality of life for our relatives and to promote dignity and respect for Indigenous people.”
Morgan will lead the development of Manitoba’s MMIWG2S+ provincial strategy and will engage with community and MMIWG2S+ families to keep Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit Manitobans safe.
