NationTalk: ANISHINAABE AND DAKOTA TERRITORY, MB — The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO), in collaboration with Southern Chiefs Economic Development LP (SCED), is excited to unveil Miikahnah Connect. This online employment application enables First Nations citizens to apply for work with SCO’s Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn project to transform the former HBC building in downtown Winnipeg.
“Miikahnah Connect is a new online platform that can help First Nations people secure employment with our Wehwehneh Bahgahkinagohn project. This new platform is also a bridge to the future for the skilled tradespeople in our Nations,” said SCO Grand Chief Jerry Daniels. “This technology will greatly contribute to the Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn project and will foster social and economic growth while creating significant long-term employment.”
Miikahnah Connect will help construction companies find skilled trade workers. The easily accessible application platform, powered by Faber Connect Technologies, will allow First Nations citizens to apply for employment. Upon securing work, the employees can contribute to the transformation of this landmark structure in the heart of Winnipeg and be a part of future business opportunities.
“We are working to create long-term employment opportunities to benefit our citizens and our Nations. I encourage every skilled tradesperson from our Nations to work with us and positively impact Winnipeg’s downtown as well as our local economies,” stated Grand Chief Daniels.
SCO and SCED invite all skilled First Nations trade professionals in Manitoba to take part in this meaningful project, making their mark on Winnipeg’s downtown landscape. The organizations are seeking general labourers for demolition and abatement, and future opportunities include mechanical, plumbing, electrical, framing, roofing, painting, flooring, metals, concrete, carpentry, glazing, and more skilled trades, as the project advances through the construction process.
“SCO and SCED are dedicated to facilitating a strong workforce,” stated Ryan Bear, Chief Executive Officer for SCED. “In addition to this new online application form, we are also sending Workforce Development Officers to the 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations to streamline training and trades development in collaboration with training partners. We encourage First Nations citizens to sign up for employment on Miikahnah Connect as soon as possible.”
