The GN and QIA Sign Letter of Partnership to Enhance Support to Inuit in the Territory

April 8, 2024

NationTalk: (Iqaluit, Nunavut) Today the Department of Economic Development and Transportation (EDT) and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association signed a Letter of Partnership that confirms collaboration and aspirational goals that outline targets intended to pursue over the next 3 years.

The QIA and EDT have a long history of closely working together on joint initiatives that benefit Qikiqtanimmiut and Nunavummiut in areas of education, training, infrastructure, housing, and childcare. This renewed partnership signals a broader approach grounded in our shared commitment to a diversified economy, and outlines actions our organizations shall take to ensure a whole-of-government approach through adequate consultation and collaboration.

“It is vital we take advantage of all economic opportunities to improve the lives of Nunavummiut while upholding the best practices around the fragile ecosystem that we are a part of.”, said Honourable David Akeeagok, Minister of EDT.

“Our goal in this partnership is to diversify our economy with focus on mining and resource development, the ocean economy including fisheries and Inuit stewardship, tourism and cultural industries, and the conservation economy.  We would also like to highlight the underlying issue of the need to immediately work towards advancing infrastructure gaps at the community level. QIA commits to prioritizing activities that create jobs and opportunities for Qikiqtani Inuit through enhanced support initiatives while working closely with municipalities to advance local economic development priorities”, said Olayuk Akesuk, President of QIA.
