Call to Action # 24 : Health (18-24)

Université de Moncton School of Nursing

November 19, 2024

The mission of the École réseau de science infirmière (ÉRSI) is to train competent nurses who distinguish themselves through their leadership, resilience and their contribution to the evolution of the profession, the healthcare system and society. The School also has the responsibility and mandate to recommend its graduates for the New Brunswick Nurses Association’s (NBNA) entry-to-practice examination. (New Brunswick (NANB)

School of Nursing Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

The School of Nursing does not make any explicit commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.

However, the Université de Moncton signed a declaration of commitment with the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation, demonstrating a recognition that could lead to reconciliation.

In addition, the Université de Moncton has signed a Statement of Commitment with the Mi’kmaq Chiefs of Mi’gmawe’l Tplu’taqnn Inc (MTI), in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s calls to action.

Call to action # 24

We call upon medical and nursing schools in Canada to require all students to take a course dealing with Aboriginal health issues, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, and Indigenous teachings and practices. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and anti-racism.

Mandatory Course: None

The Université de Moncton recognizes that its Moncton and Shippagan campuses are located on unceded Mi’kmaq ancestral lands. The Mi’kmaq Nation flag has flown there permanently since 2019. Molly Muise, a highly respected 19th-century Mi’kmaq elder, was painted on the façade of the Lafrance residence on the Moncton campus in 2017 and proudly greets members of the university community as they arrive on campus.
