4.3. Promote equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within the faculty community.
4.3.5. Pursuant to the Viens Commission’s call to action no. 24, conduct a collective and in-depth reflection on the extent to which the Faculty of Law could include a component on Quebec First Nations and Inuit Aboriginal law in its training programs.
In its 2020-2024 Strategic Plan, the Faculty of Law commits to engaging in a reflection on whether it has successfully answered to Call to action no28, but it does not mention any follow up or timeline associated with it. It also mentions call to action no 24, without specifying how and when they plan on answering it.
Call to Action # 28
We call upon law schools in Canada to require all law students to take a course in Aboriginal people and the law, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations. This will require skills-based training in intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, and antiracism.
